In occasione della Giornata internazionale della salute (10 ottobre 2018) riportiamo nuovamente
un brano dell’ultimo libro del filosofo tedesco Gernot Böhme, Gut Mensch sein (Essere bene uomo, 2016). Il pensiero di Böhme, che ha tenuto la relazione inaugurale al Convegno FIAP a Ischia, da sempre si distingue per la sua attenzione al corpo, al nostro “essere corpo” e al nostro vissuto corporeo nel contesto della cultura tecnico-scientifica in cui viviamo. Da qui nasce una certa sintonia con il pensiero di Alexander Lowen e in particolare col tardo Lowen dell’Arrendersi al corpo (1994).
Questa resa, infatti, comporta anche un’interessante revisione dei nostri concetti di “salute” e “malattia”. La rigida dicotomia tra i due concetti viene superata, tanto che lo stato di salute, anziché completa assenza di malattia, sarebbe da intendersi piuttosto come la capacità di vivere con i danni e gli impedimenti legati alla nostra natura corporea.

“Solitamente si intende la malattia come il contrario della salute. La salute è la normalità, una vita senza impedimenti, intesa come una vita in cui gli uomini sono in grado di ottemperare al rendimento richiesto. La definizione della WHO, dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Salute, è significativa: la salute è physical, mental and social well-being. Questa definizione non è solo illusoria, ma viene anche confutata dalla statistica della salute e della malattia. La statistica delle malattie più diffuse come artrite, deformazioni delle vertebre, depressione, diabete e malattie croniche del fegato ci dice che esse riguardano già circa un quarto della popolazione, senza considerare la bronchite cronica (10-30% della popolazione) e le tanto diffuse allergie.
Non appare forse assurdo definire come non normale uno stato in cui si trova da un quarto alla metà della popolazione? Bisogna piuttosto giungere a considerare la malattia come parte della vita normale. Non si può perciò continuare a concepire la malattia e la salute come concetti opposti. Anzi, la salute non è semplicemente la vita che scorre indisturbata, bensì il modo in cui una persona affronta i disturbi e gli impedimenti e in generale gli ostacoli. Questa definizione permette di considerare i portatori di handicap e i malati come persone sane e normali, la cui vita viene soltanto definita e forse anche resa difficile da certe condizioni marginali.
Da questa prospettiva, ogni idea di una vita paradisiaca appare assurda. Perché una vita senza limitazione e impedimenti non può essere considerata come vita umana, se è vero che proprio l’aspetto umano della vita è determinato dal continuo confronto con la mancanza, con gli impedimenti e gli ostacoli.
La concezione della malattia, così come anche quella del dolore, è condizionata dal fatto che nella nostra cultura la vita umana è intesa come vita activa. La vita intesa come puro agire ignora o dimentica il fatto che la vita viene esperita: la vita ci è data, è un’esperienza “patica”. E anche continuare la vita di giorno in giorno è un dono.
La malattia non è una limitazione della vita – essa appare come tale solo nella prospettiva della vita activa. La malattia è piuttosto una limitazione del rendimento. La vita accade e la malattia è la vita in circostanze particolari. Dobbiamo integrare la malattia nel nostro concetto di vitalità […]; allora la malattia, per l’intensa esperienza di sé che comporta, può essere connessa proprio con un intensificata consapevolezza di vitalità.
